Psychodynamic therapy & counselling for emotional support and mental health

Psychodynamic Counselling

At Within Counselling, I offer a compassionate and reflective space where through psychodynamic counselling and therapy, can bring about meaningful change.  This approach offers a space to explore how past experiences, often outside of conscious awareness, continue to influence present thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Through a trusting therapeutic relationship, patterns can be understood more deeply and allowing greater freedom for self-exploration. While psychodynamic therapy forms the foundation of my work, I may also draw from other approaches depending on what best supports each individual client.

How Psychodynamic Counselling Can Help

Psychodynamic counselling and therapy offers a confidential, reflective space to explore your emotional life and understand how past experiences may be shaping your present. This deeper understanding can support meaningful change in areas such as relationships, work, physical health, and overall wellbeing.

You may be seeking therapy because something feels difficult right now. You might be experiencing low mood, anxiety, overwhelm, sleep problems, or the impact of loss, trauma, or unexpected change. Some people notice patterns that feel hard to shift, such as unhelpful coping strategies, obsessive thoughts, difficulties with food, alcohol, or strong emotional reactions in relationships.

Therapy can also help with feelings of loneliness, low self-esteem, irritability, or a sense of being stuck or uncertain about direction or identity, including gender or sexuality. Different life stages—such as adolescence, parenting, midlife, menopause, retirement, or ageing—can bring challenges that feel overwhelming to face alone.

Some people come to therapy to process experiences of abuse, neglect, or emotional harm. Others simply want space to reflect, understand themselves better, and explore how they relate to others.

Whatever brings you, therapy offers a supportive, non-judgmental space to think, feel, and make sense of your experience.

Next Steps

If you’re considering therapy and would like to find out more, I an initial phone call. This allows us to talk briefly about what you’re looking for and to see whether arranging an initial consultation feels right for you.

The initial consultation lasts 50 minutes and is slightly more structured than ongoing sessions. It provides space to explore what has brought you to therapy, your current difficulties, and what you hope to gain. It also allows us both to get a sense of how it might feel to work together.

Committing to Counselling

Counselling works best when attended regularly, and we will agree on a consistent weekly appointment time.  Sessions last 50 minutes unless we make other arrangements. My standard fee is £55 - £65 for individual therapy.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed sessions without notice, will be charged at the full session fee. This policy helps maintain consistency for both clients and the practice.

Confidentiality

Counselling is a confidential process and a very private relationship. However, we cannot keep this contract of confidentiality if our clients or people they are directly connected with are at serious risk of harm or are committing a serious offence. Please ask if you would like more information about this aspect of our work.

You may find it helpful to meet with more than one therapist before deciding who feels like the right fit for you. Whichever path you take, I encourage you to seek a practitioner who is professionally regulated. You can find accredited therapists through the registers of BACP or UKCP, which are available on their official websites.
